Very few trails indicated in the greater-Portland, southern-Maine mountain bike map series are exclusively one skill level. Riders of all skill levels should be prepared to dismount on areas too steep or technical for their comfort level. Some trails have various intermediate or advanced elements, but are marked with the easier color if “go arounds” are available.

Beginner

Beginner trails are suitable for people who have experience with a bicycle, but little or no experience mountain biking. Trails marked in orange are mostly smooth without many obstacles, but trails may be rolling. Beginner riders should expect to dismount occasionally on orange trails and frequently on green trails. On orange trails, riders often prefer a mountain bike, but may find a hybrid bike is okay.

Novice

Novice trails are suitable for people who have some experience mountain biking, but not a lot, or not recently. Trails marked in green have frequent obstacles such as small to medium roots and rocks; climbs and descents may be somewhat steeper. Novice riders should expect to dismount occasionally on green trails and frequently on blue trails. On green trails, riders often prefer a mountain bike with at least front suspension.

Intermediate

Intermediate trails are suitable for people who have a fair amount of experience and ride regularly. Trails marked in blue have medium to large roots and rocks and small to medium “drops.” Climbs and descents may be sharper or longer. Corners may be tighter. Intermediate riders should expect to dismount occasionally on blue trails and frequently on black trails. On blue trails, riders often prefer a mountain bike with full suspension.

Advanced

Advanced trails are suitable for people with lots of mountain biking experience and technical skills. Trails marked in black are often very rocky. Climbs and descents may be sharp, steep and twisting, and have medium to large “drops.” Riders attempting these trails should feel comfortable descending a rocky slope equivalent to a flight of stairs. On black trails, riders often use a full-suspension bike and limb/joint protection such as shin guards, and knee/elbow pads.
